Tribal Police Service

The Tribal Police Service was established in 1995 as a cooperative service by the Little Red River Cree and the Tallcree First Nations to provide a culturally sensitive approach to community policing. In keeping the spirit of Treaty 8, the elders saw this service as an enhancement, not a replacement, of the Crown's representative, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This concept worked extremely well and has also been well accepted by the non-aboriginal people of the region.
Policy of the NPTPS was affected by a Police Commission, representing the two First Nations with management conducted by NPTC. Well trained, NPTPS officers had the full and unqualified support of the RCMP at the Headquarters level as well as that of the Commanders and members of the three detachments in the NPTC area.

Mission Statement

The NPTPS mission was to address the Nations' needs by maintaining peace and order through community policing concepts, while remaining culturally sensitive and visible in the communities.

Strategic Vision

The NPTPS provided policing to First Nations of the NPTC. The NPTPS worked in partnership with the RCMP to:
  • Provide Peace and Order in the communities;
  • Administer the law faithfully and justly, while preserving the equality and rights of all persons;
  • Consider the issues of the youth and elders at all times in the delivery of policing services.

Goals:

  1. Provide policing services in all NPTC communities by the NPTPS with full policing authority within the Province of Alberta.
  2. Provide a safe community.
  3. Involve the NPTC communities in support of the NPTPS.
  4. Provide and develop opportunities for all NPTPS police personnel.
  5. Develop potential First Nation Police Officers from our communities.

Past Police Commission Members were:

  • Chairman: Johnny Laboucan, Little Red River Cree Nation
  • Human Resource Rep: Ruth Meneen, Tallcree First Nation
  • Public Complaints Director: Gabirel D'or, Little Red River Cree Nation
  • Member:  John D. Laboucan, Tallcree First Nation
  • Member: Harvey Sewepagaham, Little Red River Cree Nation
